Doing their part to turn the tide against Global Warming |
|
We recently completed a unit in one of my classes
"How does garbage affect the world we live in?" We spent time looking
at how much waste we produce and how that impacts the world we live in.
One of the projects we did was to take a look at how we can re-use
garbage to produce items that people would use. Take a look at what
these students came up with, hopefully it will inspire others to
challenge themselves to see what they can do to also make a difference
in this world. We only have one world and this could be our last chance!

Towards the creation of a more peaceful world |
|
In my Grade 8 Humanities
class, we have been studying about war and peace. More specifically, we
have been looking at Transformation of violent cultures to more
peaceful cultures. Based on the model I use in our class, they decided
as an result of their learning to do something to promote a more
peaceful culture at school.
They launched the
"Raha4Peace" campaign where they worked on teaching the younger
students why they should not play with toy guns and other types of
weapons that can hurt people. They encouraged students to get rid of
any violent toys they had, collected them and then buried the toys
under the foundation of a new school building being built currently.
Take a look at their journey. This video was completely done by the
students with only minimal feedback from myself. If you can, positive
comments would encourage them to continue their efforts.

The magic of Tanzania - a life changing journey |
|
In March 2008, I had the honour and privilege to travel with
17 grades 6 & 7 students and Ms.Anna and Ms.Julie to Arusha,
Tanzania. While we were there we worked to improve the conditions of
students at the Loruwani Primary School. Loruwani has 1495 students and
only 9 classrooms. While there, we worked to renovate a classroom, fed
the students and got furniture for the school. The most amazing thing
though was the love and warmth that was shared between the students and
all of us. Join us on what each and every student called "a life
changing experience".

Over the past few months, I have had the honour of working with
some amazing students and teachers. I never cease to be amazed by the
ideas, ideals, potential, dreams, inspirations and creations of
children. I firmly believe that if we have high expectations, provide
the proper environment and engage our parents - learning becomes
relevant to the lives and experiences of all children.
As children begin to see their lives and experiences reflected in
their learning, the quality of their work and learning will improve. I
wanted to share some of the highlights of moments filled with love,
laughs and learning! Hopefully it will infuse your day with some
positive energy and renew our committments towards trying to make the
world a better place for all of humanity
- peace & one love "mr.c"
